Kathryn Root, Shareholder of Gevurtz Menashe, was reappointed as Chairperson of the ABA Family Law Section’s International Law Committee effective following the ABA Annual Meeting in August 2016.

The International Law Committee of the ABA Family Law Section is active in monitoring developments in international family law, including legislation and case decisions, and it produces continuing legal education programs on issues which are of interest to all family law attorneys.  Committee members maintain connections with the ABA International Law Section, other committees of the Family Law Section, the U.S. State Department Office Of Children’s Issues, the Hague Conference, and other international organizations. Root has focused her practice on family law, with an emphasis on International family law and custody disputes for 26 years.

Additionally, Root served as the Moderator for a Plenary CLE Program titled “Cross-Border Hot Tips”  presented during the ABA Family Law Section Fall Conference in Quebec City, Canada on October 22, 2016.

Josephine Ko recently joined Vigilant, where she serves as in-house employment law counsel to companies in California and Oregon. Employers rely on Josephine as their trusted advisor to solve their most complex employment and human resource issues. Her quick grasp of a company’s unique business needs, in combination with her deep employment law and litigation experience, allows her to develop real-world solutions that work. Josephine is a graduate of Duke University School of Law and the University of California, Berkeley.

Tonkon Torp attorney Ava Schoen has been elected President of the Board of Directors for Third Rail Repertory Theatre.  Schoen has been on the board since 2008.

Schoen is a bankruptcy lawyer who works in Tonkon Torp’s Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights practice group. Her practice is focused on Chapter 11 corporate reorganizations, debtor-creditor law and commercial litigation.

Third Rail Repertory Theatre was founded in 2003 to provide a dynamic, professional local company to Portland audiences. Third Rail’s permanent ensemble and guest artists share stories that provoke dialogue, encourage empathy, and inspire curiosity.

Garvey Schubert Barer is pleased to welcome Sarah Carlin Ames as an associate in the firm’s Portland office. She recently graduated summa cum laude from Lewis & Clark Law School and was selected as a member of its Cornelius Honor Society. During law school, Sarah worked for the Oregon Department of Justice’s Special Litigation Unit, helping with complicated and high-profile cases involving prisoner rights, endangered species, disabilities rights and land use.

Claudia Porter, a personal economic advisor, recently moved to Financial Reserve.

Claudia was born and raised in West Germany, where she received an M.A. in Teaching English and French from the University of Göttingen followed by a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Braunschweig Technical University. She moved to Portland in 2001, and after years in academia, she decided to take her passion for making a positive difference in other people’s lives to a different career path. She has been working as a financial advisor for just over 2 years. Her services include investment management, comprehensive financial planning, as well as career and success planning for clients who are in transition and seek help with long-term goal planning.

Davis Wright Tremaine partner Eric Dahlin has been named by Governor Kate Brown to fill the vacancy on the Multnomah County Circuit Court bench left by retiring judge Jean Maurer. He will assume his judicial duties on August 29.

Congratulations to Rachel Edwards, the Professional Liability Fund’s newest practice management advisor.

Rachel Edwards received her BA from the University of Washington in Seattle and her JD from Willamette University College of Law. She is a member of the Oregon State Bar, Oregon Women Lawyers, Multnomah Bar Association, an elected board member of the Washington County Bar Association, and a founding subcommittee member of the New Lawyers Division of the Washington County Bar Association. She has served as a Classroom Law Project Mock Trial Volunteer Judge, an Oregon Department of Human Services Adoption Contract Vendor Attorney, and a volunteer for the Convocation on Equality and the St. Andrew Legal Clinic.

Prior to joining the Professional Liability Fund in 2016, Ms. Edwards was in private practice for four years. Her areas of practice included Social Security disability, family law, adoption, and estate planning cases.  In her role as a practice management advisor for the PLF, Ms. Edwards provides practice management assistance to Oregon attorneys to reduce their risk of malpractice claims and enhance their enjoyment of practicing law. Her assistance is free and confidential.

The legal aid community is pleased to announce that Emily Teplin Fox has accepted the new position in the state litigation support unit that will focus on the use of technology in litigation.  Emily is a skilled and experienced litigator. She graduated from Yale Law School in 2007 and then worked as an Equal Justice Fellow and Staff Attorney at the Minnesota Disability Law Center representing primarily deaf and hard of hearing clients for two years. Following two years clerking for federal judges in Minnesota, Emily became an associate at Markowitz Herbold, PC in Portland where she litigated a full caseload of complex cases in both state and federal courts. At Markowitz, Emily developed expertise in the use of state-of-the-art technology in all phases of litigation.

She also served as a volunteer leader and strong advocate for the private bar to support legal aid through the Campaign for Equal Justice’s Associates Committee, as a commitee member and a co-chair. During this time she also volunteered with legal aid, developing and presenting a series of lunch hour trainings for legal services staff regarding using technology to make their litigation practice more efficient. Emily is dedicated to using her skills to achieve justice for low income client communities. She is looking forward to joining the legal aid team and helping leverage appropriate technology to enhance legal aid’s practice of law and work toward our mission of access to justice for all, not just those who can afford it.

Emily will start on July 18^th.
