OWLS Queen’s Bench Holiday
Luncheon
Honoring Women Judges
Tuesday, December 8, 2020
It’s the most wonderful time of the strangest year of our lives.
Please join us on Dec. 8 for the 30th Anniversary of the
Holiday Lunch Honoring Women Judges.
Come prepared to be awed at the “best dressed” contest, to be moved by our speakers’ touching stories, to reminisce about the past year in break out rooms, and dream together for a better future.
As the capstone of the 2020 Difficult Decisions series,
Ret. Judge Doug Beckman and Larry Muzzy
(moderated by journalist Rachel Saslow)
will have a conversation 24 years in the making.
In 1996, Judge Beckman sentenced Mr. Muzzy—then a frightened, gifted young teen—under the draconian mandatory minimums of Oregon’s new “one strike, you’re out” Measure 11. Mr. Muzzy was one of the first children to be incarcerated in Oregon under Measure 11.
Judge Beckman said that Muzzy’s case
was the hardest of his judicial career
and that it made him “almost not want to be a judge anymore.”
The Judge and Mr. Muzzy have only seen each other once since the courtroom.
