Please join OAPABA as we celebrate “The Intersectional Experience”
Featuring keynote speaker: Mia Yamamoto, Criminal Defense Attorney and Civil Rights Activist
Mia is a civil rights activist and transgender attorney from Los Angeles, California. Born in an internment camp during WWII, racial injustice has been a familiar topic for Ms. Yamamoto from an early age. Her lifelong journey is a story of triumph, for she has constructed her own cultural and gender identities while advocating for racial minority and LGBT groups. The Justice Lynn R. Nakamoto Award 2018 Recipient: The Honorable Mustafa T. Kasubhai, Lane County Circuit Court
Judge Kasubhai was appointed to the bench in 2006 and was the first APA attorney to serve as a judge in Lane County. Throughout his tenure, he has shown a commitment to the hiring, advancement, mentorship, and promotion of diverse people of all kinds. Before joining the bench, Judge Kasubhai represented those members of the community who did not have access to justice, such as farmworkers, employees injured on the job, or consumers injured by products. In a state where only about 4.5% of judges are Asian American/Pacific Islander, Judge Kasubhai is an Oregon trailblazer who truly captures the pioneering spirit of the Justice Lynn Nakamoto Award. He also exemplifies this year’s gala theme, The Intersectional Experience, being one of the few Muslim and Southeast Asian judges in Oregon.
