QUEEN’S BENCH MONTHLY LUNCHEON
SPEAKER SERIES
Jul 10 Warrior Moms – Fighting For Children With Disabilities
Please join us Tuesday, July 10th at noon at the federal courthouse in Portland or via FacebookLive on the Queen’s Bench Facebook page for “Warrior Moms – Fighting For Children With Disabilities” with Heather Decker (former attorney and current business management coach); Beth Farnum; former high school teacher and current education litigator and disability rights advocate Elizabeth Polay (Wiscarson Law); and disability rights litigator Laurie Zwingli (Law Office of Laurie H. Zwingli, LLC).
Historically, people with disabilities have faced invisibility, institutionalization, abuse and neglect; often, they have been denied fundamental civil rights including but not limited to access to appropriate education, healthcare, and reasonable accommodations. The last century marked the beginning of a sea change with the passage of landmark federal legislation that changed the lives of people experiencing intellectual, developmental, or other disabilities and their families. Despite these great strides, however, many obstacles still stand in the way of authentic, comprehensive inclusion. In the absence of an attorney, a parent—in particular, mothers—is often their child’s best advocate. At the July Queen’s Bench lunch, we will hear from mothers and litigators who have served in that role for their children or clients.
CLE credit is being sought.
For those attending in person, we are excited to announce that Queen’s Bench lunches will now be catered by a woman-owned business, Full Belly Fare, which can accommodate the dietary diversity of all attendees, including gluten free, vegetarian, dairy free, soy free, and vegan. Lunches are $15 ($5 for students) and can be purchased here on the Queen’s Bench website. Attendees can also RSVP to [email protected] and bring their own lunch at no cost. As always, nursing mothers, children, and all members of the Portland community are celebrated and welcome at Queen’s Bench luncheons.
If you are unable to make this lunch in person, tune in to Facebook Live on the Queen’s Bench Facebook page for a live stream of the event! The live stream is also stored on our Facebook page for convenient viewing any time, free of charge, from any device.
Each calendar year, the Queen’s Bench luncheons and events focus on a different theme consistent with our mission to promote professional advancement, camaraderie, and good fellowship among women in the legal profession and the community. During 2018, we will explore and look at Oregon with an intersectional lens. Everyone is welcome – you need not be a member to attend our events.
Except where indicated otherwise below, our monthly luncheons will be held at the federal courthouse, 1000 SW Third Avenue, Portland, OR (courtroom to be announced on a sign in the lobby each month). Doors open at 11:45 a.m., and our speakers will begin at noon. Please bring photo identification to present to courthouse security.
Nursing mothers and young children are welcome, and celebrated, at all Queen’s Bench events.
