Have you been furloughed, fired, or foiled? Have you had a hard time finding work? Do you expect to be fired or laid off in the future? Queen’s Bench, the Multnomah County Chapter of the Oregon Women Lawyers and the OWLS Membership Committee would like to help.
Beginning September 29, 2020, Queen’s Bench will hold 40-minute informal bi-weekly drop-in meetings on Zoom to support lawyers across Oregon who are looking for work. You do not need to be an OWLS or Queen’s Bench member to participate. Participants who wish to remain anonymous should feel free to use a pseudonym, participate without video, and mute their microphone during meetings. All are welcome.
The meetings will begin with a brief speaker or two and end with a casual conversation where we would like to hear from you about the difficulties that you are facing in your search for work. The meetings will be a safe space to speak freely about the challenges you have faced in losing a job or in finding work during this challenging time.
Our goal is to provide prompt and practical assistance to lawyers in Oregon who are facing employment challenges. For example, we will do our best to connect participants with OWLS members and other lawyers who practice in the area of law in which participants want to practice who can connect you with other practitioners in that area. Other opportunities for assistance include reviewing resumes and cover letters and conducting mock interviews. The precise contours of this group’s mission will remain flexible until we learn more about participants’ needs and how we can help to meet them.
Because we know that losing a job unexpectedly and looking for employment sometimes cannot wait, we invite lawyers looking to make connections in their areas of interest or requesting assistance with updating their resume or writing a cover letter to email the Queen’s Bench subcommittee leading this effort at queensbenchivebeeneffed@gmail.
Liani Reeves, current Oregon State Bar President and Shareholder and President of Bullard Law, will be our inaugural speaker. Liani has experienced an abrupt job loss and will share the story of how she overcame that and landed on her feet. We invite and encourage other Oregon lawyers who have experienced an unexpected job loss to join us at future meetings to share their stories of redemption.
