About the panelists:
Valerie Sasaki
Valerie is an alumna of Tulane University, the University of Oregon Law School (Go Ducks), and University of Washington where she received her LLM in taxation. She has worked in big 4 accounting and with the Portland office of a large regional law firm, although maintains that she learned most of what she knows about working with clients when she was as an optician helping people pick eyeglass frames in her dad’s clinic while she was in high school. She teaches partnership tax in the Portland State University Masters of Tax Program. Valerie is a past chair of the Taxation Section and also serves as immediate past Chair of the business law section. She is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and leads Samuels Yoelin Kantor, LLP’s tax practice. In her spare time, Valerie enjoys travelling to places that freak her family out, reading as much as possible, and spoiling her two small Chihuahua-mix dogs. Her dream is to win the lottery and start a company that administers pet trusts so she can spend all day playing with animals who don’t complain about their bills.
Tracy Reeve
Portland City Attorney Tracy Reeve is a native Portlander and fourth generation Oregonian. She graduated from Lincoln High School, Lewis and Clark College and the University of Washington School of Law. After law school Tracy spent several years in private practice, first in San Diego with Gibson Dunn & Crutcher (a large national law firm) then, after returning to Portland, with the Stoel Rives firm. Tracy has been with the City of Portland for approximately 24 years and is extremely proud to lead the City Attorney’s Office, which she believes to be the best public law office in the state. In her free time, Tracy loves to run, hike, do yoga, travel, garden, read and cook. She is committed to uncovering, identifying and understanding her own biases so she can be a more effective anti-racism ally, and she is privileged to mentor women in recovery from substance abuse.
Julia E. Markley
Julia is a partner in the Portland office of Perkins Coie. She represents technology and retail companies in litigation over trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, non-disclosure agreements, non-competition agreements, licenses, and business contracts. From 2016-2020, Julia served on Perkins Coie’s Executive Committee, the governing body of the firm. Julia is a past OWLS board member, and currently serves on the board of the OWLS Foundation.
