CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN OREGON
May 17, 2024
Mission Statement:
The “Freedom to Marry” in Oregon was established on May 19, 2014, in U.S. District Court Judge Michael McShane’s Order in the Rummell and Geiger cases. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of this historic ruling, a special celebration will be held in Harris Hall, 125 East 8th Ave, Eugene, on Friday May 17, 2024, from 1-4 pm.
The aim of this event is to celebrate access to justice and highlight the importance of ensuring all individuals, regardless of socio-economic status, cultural heritage, or family composition, have equal opportunities to participate in marriage ceremonies recognized and protected by the law. In addition, Judges at the Lane County Courthouse are generously volunteering their time to officiate free wedding ceremonies for couples from diverse backgrounds, and who might otherwise face economic hardship or other barriers to accessing this service.
Event info:
Doors will open at 1 pm. A program with speakers will begin at 1:30 pm, including keynote remarks by Judge McShane and other leaders. Pre-registered couples wishing to exchange or renew vows will then go with judges for individual wedding ceremonies. Ceremonies will take place in individual courtrooms. After the wedding ceremonies, a cake and beverage reception to toast the couples and their guests will conclude the event, from 3:30-4:00.
This project is being made possible through collaboration with the Lane County Circuit Court; Lane County Commissioner and Board Chair Laurie Trieger; and The Office of the Lane County Clerk; along with groups from the local legal community and area nonprofit organizations.
